Hi, new to the NCT, am doing the 100 mile challenge, I am from Mercer and have been hitting several spots along the nearby trail. I was on the section today between Hallston Road and 308 in West Sunbury, and was concerned as this section was very overgrown and it seemed neglected. I had been on this section in the winter and it was good. I know that all the rain has made everything grow crazy, along with normal spring… of course. :). I wondered if anyone was planning a clean up there, I would volunteer also. I did some very limited clean up today as I walked, pushing back briars, and moved some large limbs out of the path. Please let me know. Thanks so much!! Very much enjoying my experiences thus far, and want to help others do the same. I still had a good time today, despite the ‘rough going’, but… my legs are torn up from briars. 😉

Hi Coreen,

Thanks for your report on trail conditions. The rain this spring and early summer has produced weeds and multiflora rose growth that is 2x and 3x mormal.
I will forward to our maintainers in that area. There is a planned trail maintenance day this Saturday near there. Here are the details from Brian Loutzenhiser, our chapter VP:

I’ve recently found the North Country Trail is in need of some maintenance southwest of the Pleasant Valley parking area. There are several trees down across the trail in this section. Also, the gamelands management has attempted to dig some drainage ditches near the trail and dumped the spoil on top of our trail. The dirt, rock, and roots will need to be cleared so that we can get the DR Mower past this area. I’m planning to get started Saturday morning if the weather is good around 9:00AM at Pleasant Valley. If anyone has free time that day, please let me know. Brian bloutz@zoominternet.net

Do you have a mailing address? I would like to make a memorial contribution in honor of John Stehle.

Thanks,

Is it possible to make a donation directly to the Butler Chapter (and if so, where should I send it) or do I need to go through the national office?

All our funds go through the national office; you can donate online via their website or mail it in. In both cases note it is for the Butler Chapter.

Ron: I regularly run the NCT and the GRT and have run the GRT Trail Race and Ultramarathon for the past 5 years. I recently registered to run the Buckeye Trail 50K in Brecksville, OH and they informed me that in order to run it, I need to do at 3 volunteer hours either a trail race or for a trail organization. Obviously, I have no problem doing that, but with race being on July 9, I don’t have much time. Do you have any ideas or suggestions on how I can help do some work on the trails here in Butler and have someone sign off on the their form? Thanks.

Hi Victor, I will forward your info to our trail adopters, who always have some trimming/mowing/lopping work to do on the trail.

Ron Rice,

Please email me about the two days a week that you are doing trail work near West Sunbury and I will attempt to help. Days, times, place, what to bring, etc.

Hi Jane, Ron added you to his trailwork email list and you will be contacted when our next trail workdays are scheduled. ( They may be of short notice due to bad weather, etc.)
