Location and Travel
Augusta, Michigan
August is a village in Kalamazoo County, Michigan. It is situated on M-96, about five miles Northeast of Galesburg and about seven miles west of downtown Battle Creek. Kalamazoo is an additional ten miles west. Fort Custer Recreation Area is also nearby – just South of the village on the East side of the Kalamazoo River.
Augusta was established in 1832 when Dr. Salmon King built the first log cabin and an inn there. The town was officially named when it received a post office in 1838 by a settler and the first postmaster, George Rigby. George Rigby originated from Augusta, Maine.
Augusta today has preserved much of its small town atmosphere, including the original railroad depot and the Barn Theater. This theater is the oldest summer stock theater in Michigan and still features local talent and guest performers from all around the country.
Augusta is also home to the 2012 North Country Trail Association’s Annual Conference!
