Why Duluth?

Minnesota’s 4th largest city is developing a reputation as a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts and the City is billing itself as a Premier Trail Destination.    Voters just recently selected Duluth as the “Best Outdoors Town” in an Outside Magazine poll.

Several years ago, Backpacker Magazine readers voted it their favorite Midwest trail town.  It also made Backpacker’s list of the Top 25 places in the U.S. to raise an outdoor kid and Outside Magazine listed it as a Top 10 Outdoor Town and also just recently named it the Adventure Hub runner-up in the entire world!  The American Birding Association named it the “Birdiest Small City” because of the great diversity of birds that live in or pass through Duluth.

Enough of the accolades, what about the fabulous hiking in Duluth?  Did we mention that there’s 43 miles of the Superior Hiking Trail right in Duluth or that the City serves as the gateway to the famed North Shore?  Visit our photo gallery for a look at the great hiking opportunities!

Duluth is also famous as an inland sea port at the head of the Great Lakes.  Learn more by visiting the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center (located right on the Superior Hiking Trail) or via the fantastic Duluth Shipping News website. Be sure to check out the live webcam of the Lift Bridge if you can’t be there!

Why Spirit Mountain?

Spirit Mountain is a City-owned year-round recreation area that is located just a few miles from downtown Duluth and all it has to offer. The Superior Hiking Trail winds around the slopes of Spirit Mountain and two spur trails connect with the Campground and the summit lodge.  Here are some of the fun things to do in the Spirit Mountain area…
