Trail Description
The NCT follows gravel roads that run parallel to the New Rockford Canal, which starts north of the town of New Rockford, runs west for approximately 42 miles through Wells and Eddy Counties, and ends on the east side of the Lonetree Wildlife Management Area south of Harvey. The route is marked by intermittent yellow Carsonite posts but hikers are free to walk anywhere and may see abundant wildlife in the canal depending upon water levels.
Regulated Uses
These access roads are supposed to be closed to public vehicular traffic but some people do drive on them to access the canal. The NCT is open to hiking, horseback riding, and biking.
Camping Regulations
Overnight camping is not allowed along the New Rockford Canal.
