The Allegheny 100 Challenge (A-100) is an unsupported endurance hiking challenge in Pennsylvania with no timekeepers, no aid stations, and no finish line other than the one hikers set for themselves. Hikers are challenged to traverse 25, 50, 75, or 100 miles through the Allegheny National Forest on the North Country National Scenic Trail within 50 hours – this year, traveling from north to south through the Forest.

Each year more than half the participants sign up to attempt the 100 miles, though usually only about 20% are able to reach their goal. But most who fall short of the 100 miles still complete 50 miles. The NCTA Allegheny National Forest (ANF) Chapter encourages participants to consider time, energy and the possibility of injury. Participants are also encouraged to carefully choose mileage goals, as no transportation is guaranteed except the shuttle from your chosen end point back to the starting line. In 2021, 134 hikers started the challenge, 96 finished.

This year’s event will take place June 10-12. Set your alarm: The lottery for a registration slot opens March 7: Enter here. It closes on March 14 and winners of a registration slot will be notified no later than March 18. Those selected to participate in the A-100 will have from March 21 at 8:00 a.m. until March 31 at 8:00 a.m. to finalize registration. This includes paying the registration fee ($80) and providing any additional details necessary. Minors (under 18 years of age) may participate in the A-100 only if a parent or guardian signs the waiver form (available for download and print), and an adult accompanies the minor during the event.

If you aren’t able or willing to participate in the A-100 Challenge but would like to volunteer, please contact the ANF Chapter at anf@northcountrytrail.org.
