Meet up with the Chequamegon Chapter at the North Country Trail parking lot on Old Grade Road/Forest Road 202 (GPS coordinates 46.3062, -91.01047). From Grand View WI, take County Road D south, then head east on Camp 8 Road/FR 377 to Old Grade Road. Turn south on Old Grade Road, and the parking lot will be approximately 1.6 miles on the east side of the road.

Please note that no pets will be allowed on this hike due to the vehicle shuttle.

After meeting at the Old Grade Road parking lot, we will leave most of the vehicles there and shuttle to the start of the hike on Snake Trail Road. This is a moderately strenuous hike 3.7-mile hike with long uphill segments, with several outstanding viewpoints and other points of interest. As we head west from Snake Trail Road, we will be treated to several overlooks and make a quick stop at the Swedish Settlement, once farmed by a Swedish family in the late 1800’s.
After crossing the Marengo River we will take a short break at a small shelter on the bank of the river; there will be a vault toilet nearby (the only such facility on this hike, so plan accordingly).
After another long uphill hike, we will come to Juniper Rock, a large rock outcropping that offers a stunning vista of the overlooks the Marengo River valley. We will take a short break at Juniper Rock, and then hike the remaining .6 miles back to the Old Grade parking lot.

Mosquitos, black flies, and ticks are likely to be present, and the trail is likely to be muddy/wet in spots this time of the year. A hat, long-sleeved shirt, and long pants treated with insect repellent are recommended. Bring plenty of water and snacks; will take a short break at least once an hour. The hiking speed will be moderate (about 2 miles per hour) depending on the terrain, and we will be hiking on dirt tread; this hike is not accessible for people with mobility impairments. Cell phone coverage will be spotty.
