The NCTA Chequamegon Chapter is teaming up with the Chequamegon Humane Association (CHA) for Tails on the Trail event. We’ll pamper shelter dogs by giving them a day out, a long walk in the woods, a picnic, and a pup cup at Culver’s. In the process, we hope to showcase adoptable animals, raise awareness of the North Country National Scenic Trail, and raise money for the Chequamegon Humane Association to continue its good work.

The dog walkers will meet at the Beaver Lake Campground at 9:15 a.m. where we will have adjoining campsites for a post-hike picnic. The human participants will want to bring a camp chair (to be left at the campground for the picnic), water, a small water bowl for their canine companion, a snack for themselves, and some dog treats (optional). At approximately 9:30, the dog walkers will be shuttled to the Mineral Lake Trailhead where they will meet the shelter dogs. The dogs should arrive around 10:00 a.m.

About a week before the hike, prospective dog walkers will be given a list and brief description of the participating dogs. We will endeavor to match dog walkers to dogs accordingly. We will probably have more walkers than dogs, so we anticipate assigning multiple humans to each dog. The humans will take turns walking the dog and giving the dog treats for good behavior. The dogs will be leashed and we expect the pace to be leisurely.

We will assemble at Beaver Lake Campground sometime between noon and 12:30 p.m. for our post-hike picnic. The Chapter and CHA will supply water, lemonade, hotdogs, bratwurst, chips, and cookies. We will also provide paper plates, napkins, and condiments. Each dog will get a hotdog for being a good trail companion. After lunch, the dogs will enjoy a “pup cup” at Culver’s and the walkers are invited to join them for an ice cream treat.

The alternate date for this event is Sunday, October 15.

Please RSVP to Kevin Schram at che@northcountrytrail.org by October 6. We are also looking for people who are willing to a) walk a dog, b) shuttle dog walkers, c) set up for the picnic, d) photograph the event, e) and possibly shuttle dogs from CHA to the trailhead, if the event is postponed to October 15.

If you would like to support the animals at CHA in another way, donations are deeply appreciated. Checks can be sent to PO Box 93, Ashland, WI, 54806. (Please write “T on the T” in the memo area.)
