Chief Noonday Chapter Monthly Meeting
The NCTA Chief Noonday Chapter‘s annual Kalamazoo County meeting will be held in the Kellogg Conference Center in Hickory Corners, Mich. We will be treated to Holly VanderSel presenting a program on “Research at Kellogg Biological Station.”
Holly VanderStel is a research technician and lab manager for the Evans Lab at Kellogg Biological Station (KBS) where she studies microbial ecology. She graduated with a BA in Biology from Hope College in 2014. After undergraduate studies, she worked for the Climate Change Science Institute at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee until joining KBS in 2018. Her work has led her on many scientific adventures from agricultural fields in Michigan to bogs in Minnesota to the tussock tundra of Alaska.
Holly will give an overview of the KBS (through which the NCNST runs!), talk about her work there, and provide insight into the job of a lab technician. Her current work focuses on microbes (bacteria and fungi) that live in soils and their interactions with the ecosystem – especially under drought conditions. Some experiments are close to home, such as a drought experiment on agricultural test plots in Hickory Corners. Others involve collaborating with scientists around the world to study how rainfall levels affect soils and microbes globally.
