This month, our Chapter meeting is held in Albion, Michigan (Calhoun County). We have one meeting a year in the southern end of our 120 miles of trail.

We are excited to have a special speaker for our meeting! Lucy Hough is the Assistant Director of Community Development. As such, she is the head of the Calhoun County Parks Department, as well as Recycling and Veterans Affairs departments. Lucy is passionate about building community and sees great opportunity in the County Parks program’s future, to get families outside to enjoy the many parks and recreational opportunities offered throughout Calhoun County. The North Country Scenic Trail travels through a number of Calhoun County’s parks, including Historic Bridge Park, Kimball Pines Park and Ott Biological Preserve near Battle Creek, as well as one of the Counties’ newest parks: Ménwabek Meadow Park near Albion.

Chief Noonday is starting discussions with Calhoun County to increase the ability to camp along the NCT as long-distance hikers recognize the opportunities offered by the NCT. We are also hopeful for the opportunity to develop new trail west of Marshall along the Kalamazoo River in the coming years.

Lucy will share her perspective of the recent history and planned goals for the County and how it will impact the NCT in a positive manner.

For those interested, some members will plan on dinner at Albion Malleable Brewing at 5:30 (420 S. Superior St., Albion) This is about 3 blocks south of Stirling Books. Stirling Books has baked goods, coffee, tea, etc. and we would certainly want to support their business with some purchases.
