Join the NCTA Jordan Valley 45° Chapter for a volunteer appreciation hike and lunch on October 14. We’ll hike from Springvale Road to Thumb Lake Road (about 7.75 miles) starting at 9:30 a.m. then lunch at the Chandler Township Hall around 2:00 p.m.

For the hike, we will meet at the trail crossing on Thumb Lake Road and Slashing Road (Michigan Mile 643.5) at 9:30 and drive hikers to the start on Springvale Road at 10:00. After the hike, we will ferry drivers back to the start at Springvale Road. We’re also offering a short hike option: By trail, Chandler Hill Road is about 4.75 miles south of the start at Springvale Road. If there is interest, we can post some cars there, too.

This beautiful section of Trail is hilly and runs the crest of the high ridge that runs north/south between I-75 and US-131 from south of Petoskey to Thumb Lake Road. Most of the trail is high and dry through old growth forest. Highlights along the way include a big marsh, a sink hole, and creek crossings. There is a fairly tiring hike up Chandler Hill, which goes uphill for the better part of a mile toward Thumb Lake Road. Dress for the weather, and bring trail snacks and water.

Afterwards, there is a volunteer appreciation lunch. Anyone can hike without stopping for lunch, or just come for lunch without hiking. The Chandler Township Hall is located at 7620 Chandler Hill Road in Boyne Falls.

Please join us to express our appreciation to those who volunteer their time and resources to support the JV45° segment of the North Country National Scenic Trail. Kevin Whitley will be cooking burgers and brats. Don’t feel obligated, but extra dishes won’t be refused. For lunch questions and, so we have an idea of how many to expect, please RSVP by text to Annie Matz at 231 675-7387. But definitely come, even if you forget to RSVP!
