Fort Stanwix National Monument is a small site with a big story. Built to defend the only break in the East-West water route of what is now New York state, the fort was active in both the French and Indian War and the American Revolution, after which it was known as “the fort that never surrendered”. In addition to it’s military use, the site was also home to two important American Indian treaty negotiations in 1768 and 1784, the last one officially ending the nine-year conflict with England.
