Oriental Bittersweet Abatement
A number of invasive plant species have flourished in the Lowell State Game Area, and one of the worst is oriental bittersweet: a vine that climbs trees, strangles them, and when it reaches their peak, steals their light. This event will be a service project in which NCTA volunteers work with staff from the Kent Conservation District (KCD) to significantly reduce the infestation of oriental bittersweet. We’ll park along the side of the road and walk in, a distance of a few hundred yards. The undergrowth is dense and sometimes thorny so wear heavy duty clothing and leather shoes. Bring water and a snack. We will be out of range for many cell phones. KCD will provide training so no previous experience or special skills are needed. Gloves, herbicide, and loppers will be provided.
The work site is in the Lowell State Game Area on Montcalm Avenue, about one mile south of Flat River Drive / Sayles Road.
There is limited attendance (15). Please contact the Chapter with RSVP or questions at wmi@northcountrytrail.org.
