The Western terminus of the North Country National Scenic Trail begins at the back door of the visitor center in beautiful and historic Lake Sakakawea State Park. The temporary route, following the auto tour route through the Audubon National Wildlife Refuge, is an excellent place to see an abundance of waterfowl and pheasants. A long portion of the trail follows the McClusky Canal and also runs adjacent to numerous waterfowl and game management areas. Waterfowl, game birds and a wide variety of wildlife are readily observable in this piece of Big Sky country.
