Chequamegon Chapter Workdays
During these two workdays, the Chequamegon Chapter of the North Country Trail Association will build backpacker campsites at Canthook Lake and Steelhead Lake.
At each campsite, we’ll build an access trail and trail to a water source, clear three tent pads, a fire ring, and walk-around space in the campsite, and install one or more signposts and a campsite registration box.
On Saturday we will walk about ¾ mile (one-way) on a newly built tread on gently rolling terrain to the Canthook Lake campsite. On Sunday we will hike about 1 ½ miles (one-way) to Steelhead Lake. With a big crew we may be able to start the Steelhead Lake campsite work on Saturday.
Work will end around noon to early afternoon each day, then we’ll hike out.
If you arrive late, follow the new trail southward along the west side of Canthook Lake until you reach the crew.
Crew will carry in a few extra tools, but bring your own if you wish. We plan to use mainly Pulaskis, mattocks, McLeods, loppers, and a post-hole digger. Bring gloves, water, snacks, and appropriate clothing for the weather.
Mel Baughman and Kevin Schram will be crew leaders. Please reply by noon on October 15 to Mel at baugh001@umn.edu with which day(s) you can help. If plans change due to weather or other circumstances, Mel will send an email the evening before each workday to people who notified him that they plan to participate.
We need to carry in a variety of tools and posts so a big turnout will lighten the work for everyone! These are our final workdays for the year. Let’s finish this reroute!
