2026 NCTA Volunteer Awards: Leadership

Leadership Awards are presented to volunteers who have demonstrated exceptional leadership that has resulted in significant local achievements or highly successful events.

JoEllen Sokoloski
JoEllen has been a core member of the Wampum Chapter for more than two decades. As Chapter Treasurer, committee leader, event organizer, Trail Town advocate, and hands-on volunteer, she has quietly ensured the Chapter’s success while always putting others first. From blazing trail and maintaining finances to welcoming newcomers and building community partnerships, JoEllen’s service reflects a deep love for the North Country Trail and the people it brings together. Her reliability, generosity, and servant leadership have inspired fellow volunteers and strengthened the Wampum Chapter for decades. JoEllen’s lasting legacy is not only in the work she has accomplished, but in the vibrant community she has helped create.

Mark Wadopian
Whether serving as Chapter President or Vice President, advocating for the trail in Washington, leading hikes, mentoring volunteers, or tackling countless trail construction and maintenance projects, Mark has always answered the call to serve. His willingness to take on any task – combined with his collaborative spirit – has strengthened the Central New York Chapter and expanded opportunities for future generations of hikers. Surpassing 1,000 volunteer hours is only one measure of his exceptionally positive impact; Mark’s greatest legacy is the thriving trail community he has helped build in Central New York.

Kevin Whitley
Kevin leads by example, never seeking recognition but always willing to serve wherever he is needed. He has consistently put the needs of the trail first – from tackling muddy projects to stepping forward to become Chapter President when no one else would. At volunteer appreciation events, Kevin is behind the grill, ensuring others feel valued before thinking of himself. His determination and reliability have kept Michigan’s Jordan Valley 45° Chapter moving forward through both challenges and successes. If Kevin promises to do something, it gets done. He is an inspiration.
