Canthook Lake Reroute
The Chequamegon Chapter is rerouting the NCNST just south of Iron River so we can abandon a waterless stretch of trail in favor of a new trail that weaves around four scenic lakes: Steelhead, Canthook, Happles, and Silver Lakes. Our goal this year was to build the southern half of the planned reroute, about 3.4 miles of new trail that goes around Steelhead and Canthook Lakes, both of which will eventually have backcountry campsites. We have accomplished this goal and invite you to hike it with us and see the new route and proposed campsites.
This is a 4.4-mile hike. The distance and a few elevation changes make it moderately strenuous. The pace will be leisurely, about 2 miles per hour, and we will take a break every hour.
Insect repellent is recommended because ticks will probably be active, but with that exception, the hike should be bug free. Dress for the weather and bring hat, water, and snacks or lunch.
We will meet at 9 AM at Canthook Lake. There is an access road down to the lake just east of Canthook Lake Road, a/k/a FR 412.
GPS coordinates: 46.474335, -91.358472.
The northern terminus of Canthook Lake Road is Scenic Drive. The Southern terminus is Musky Lake Road, a/k/a FR 411. The access road is about 1.1 miles south of Scenic Drive on the left (as you go south) or about 3.1 miles north of Musky Lake Road on the right (as you go north). We will shuttle hikers to the West Delta Road, a/k/a FR 231, trailhead to start the hike.
Please note that dogs are generally not allowed on shuttled hikes.
