The latest, Winter 2009-2010, issue of the Call of the North (Minnesota’s NCTA member/friend newsletter) is now available for download (call-of-the-north-winter-2009-10, 1.6 MB).

Here’s a sneak peak into the contents:

  • Cover Story: Todd McMahon’s account of Order of the Arrow volunteers from the Boy Scouts of America who  helped clear the Kekekabic Trail this summer while staying at the Charles L. Sommer Canoe Base near Ely.

  • Odds & Ends (discusses new economic reports issued by the Tourism Center at the University of Minnesota show that hiking/walking is THE economic powerhouse in MN and highlights a new EPA website on insect repellent safety)

  • Scenes from the NCT (a collection of photos from around the North Country Trail in Minnesota and even one member’s picture from MI)

  • ITM Mushroom Hike report (a short article about a September hike that the Itasca Moraine (ITM) Chapter hosted with the Paul Bunyan Mushroom Club)

  • BRT Hike Report (a report from Nick Graham on his May 2009 thru-hike of the Border Route Trail)
