2026 NCTA Volunteer Awards: Friend of the Trail
Friend of the Trail Awards are presented to public employees, units of government, and members of organizations whose leadership, accommodations, and active collaboration have substantially benefited the North Country Trail or the NCTA.
Will Cooksey
Will’s partnership has been essential in opening new possibilities for the North Country Trail. Through his work with the Trust for Public Land and his teamwork with both the NCTA and National Park Service, Will successfully guided two significant land acquisitions in Northern Wisconsin, creating critical connections that will allow miles of future trail to be built. Beyond his expertise, Will’s greatest gift has been his collaborative spirit: patiently listening, explaining complex processes, building trust, and finding solutions among landowners, communities, and agencies. His positive attitude and genuine commitment have made challenging and complex projects possible.
Steve DeBrabander
Steve has been an extraordinary champion for the North Country Trail, ensuring that resources reached the places where they could make the greatest impact. Through his leadership with the Iron Belle Trail Funds and Michigan Trails Fund, Steve helped secure nearly $300,000 in support for vital trail projects, including bridges, boardwalks, puncheon, engineering, and youth crews. More than the funding, Steve’s generosity was reflected in his commitment to understanding our needs. He consistently stayed connected, adapted as challenges arose, and believed in the value of the trail and its volunteers.
Aaron Kania
Aaron has been an exceptional advocate for the North Country Trail, strengthening connections between it and the U.S. Forest Service, local communities, and fellow trail organizations. Throughout his career as a District Ranger for the Superior National Forest, Aaron championed the NCT by advancing key projects and helping navigate challenges. Beyond his professional role, he generously shared his time and passion by scouting routes, recruiting volunteers, and creating opportunities for future trail growth in Northern Minnesota. Aaron’s partnership has been more than professional – it has been a true investment in the trail and the people who care for it.

Dan Kephart and Matt Leischer
Dan and Matt of Wisconsin’s Brule River State Forest have been invaluable partners of the North Country Trail, having helped protect, maintain, and enhance the 24-mile trail corridor within the forest. They have supported volunteers through training, trail access, equipment assistance, educational resources, and countless acts of service – from clearing hazards and plowing trailhead parking areas to helping create viewing platforms, memorial benches, and interpretive features. Their willingness to listen, problem-solve, and work alongside the Brule-St. Croix Chapter reflects a true spirit of partnership.
