Hello North Country Trail hikers!

The Peter Wolfe Chapter in the Western UP of Michigan invites you on an afternoon hike led by Mark Roberts and John Diebel. The hike is an approximately 5 mile out-and-back hike on PWC segment 28 maintained by adopter John Diebel, on the Ottawa National Forest in Ontonagon County.

Meet us at the start point next to the road bridge by 2 pm EDT on the Mud Creek Road on the east side of the small bridge over the East Branch of the Ontonagon River here: 46.658420, -89.046761. If you need to use facilities, stop before you arrive at the start point.

Bring water, a snack, (and poles if you use them) and friends. This is a well-improved trail on the remote rugged forest with some ups and downs. John has recently completed his mid-summer maintenance of this trail and he suggests: “With the warmer weather, it is time to implement your biting insect mitigation strategy on this hike.” And bring a swimsuit and towel if you would like to join some of us who might jump into Bob Lake to cool off after the hike!

We will be hiking on PWC segment 28, on the North Country Trail. We will park in the limited space along the Mud Creek Road near where the NCT enters the woods just east of the bridge. We’ll be starting at mile MI-134.5 to about mile MI-137 at a beaver dam across an unnamed creek and then retrace our steps back to the cars.

Cell phone service may not be available on many parts of our chapter’s trail.

If you are participating in the Hike 100 miles on the NCT in 2026, you can add about 5 miles to your hike total.

We will do the trip rain or shine. If we have to cancel the hike; we will post cancellation on our Facebook page by 9:30 am Eastern time.

Please let us know if you would like to help us maintain the NCT trail! We have several 1 to 3 mile long segments that still need local adopters and we need volunteers for our mowing crew and a gas brushing crew using chapter equipment. (Take a vacation to the Western UP of Michigan and spend a couple days helping us on the trail!)
Your help on the PWC trail would be greatly appreciated!
