The Grand Traverse Hiking Club, one of 40 chapters and affiliates of the North Country Trail Association, celebrated National Trails Day 2009 with Senator Carl Levin (D-MI) officially opening a new spur trail linking the North Country Trail to the cities of Kalkaska and Traverse City. In a ceremony that also featured North Country Trail long distance hikers Joan Young and “Eb” Eberhard, aka NimbleWill Nomad, the GTHC recognized partnership efforts by the Kalkaska Area Recreational Trail and the Traverse Area Recreational Trail. These organizations along with GTHC and the NCTA worked together to create the newly opened spur, which enabled the linking of all the major trail systems in the area.

In Wisconsin the Brule-St. Croix Chapter dedicated a campsite in honor of Paul Shoch, an active NCTAer who went missing on an Alaska trip in 2007. After the dedication the chapter led hikes for both beginers and more seasoned hikers. After a potluck picnic attendees walked the Brule Bog Boardwalk that was finished last fall.

The Chief Baw Beese chapter, which has responsibility for the trail in southern Michigan, worked to open trail south of M-34 near Osseo on National Trails Day. We hiked in about .3 miles clearing overhanging brush, crossed a shin-deep stream, then opened a new .1 mile bypass of a parking lot in Lost Nation State Game Area.
