Behind the Numbers: Meet Harlan
Behind every one of the 90,720 volunteer hours tallied for 2026 is a story of personal dedication. Meet Harlen: one of the many passionate stewards who bring those numbers to life.
When Harlen first discovered the North Country Trail back in the 1980s, he jumped straight in – joining his local Chapter, assisting at events, and bushwhacking through dense woods. But his commitment went far beyond the average schedule.
For 12.5 years, Harlen worked the overnight shift. After work at 6:00 a.m., he would drive four hours north toward the trail, occasionally pulling over for a quick roadside nap to keep going. Every year, he dedicated a full week of hard-earned vacation time to join the Wisconsin Roving Trail Crew.
Now retired, Harlen gets a bit more sleep, but his devotion to the trail family has never wavered. Over decades of service, he has built lasting friendships and cleared the path for countless hikers.
Harlen’s story is a powerful reminder of the passion that fuels the NCT. As Harlen puts it: “Even if you can’t volunteer, your membership is worth it – knowing the trail can be taken care of for future generations.”
