Saturday, October 19 provides the NCTA Chief Noonday Chapter a chance to get hikers off the road and back into some natural scenery! We will be breaking new trail through the Maher Sanctuary located at the southwest corner of Wood School Rd. and 108th St on the border of Kent & Barry County.

We will meet at 9:30 at the trailhead on 108th St. to have a short safety talk and break into teams. Near Mile # 1017.5

Wear long sleeves/long pants – much of the work will be clearing invasive brush! Loppers, pruning shears, hedge trimmers (battery – of course) are all good tools – The Chapter will be providing some of their own. Some leveling of trail is needed, so shovels, hoes, “mattocks” if you even know what those are would be welcomed! Again – the Chapter will provide some of these.

This sanctuary contains a series of wetlands surrounded by glacial features and is viable habitat for over 137 species of birds. The property features over 250 species of plants, and a wide variety of other forms of wildlife.

For anyone interested in ‘charging their batteries’ prior to the workday we will have a casual meet-up breakfast at Thornapple Kitchen on M-37 (North side of Middleville) starting at 8 AM.
