As you probably all know, Northern Lower Michigan was recently hit by a severe ice storm and most of the state land in our Jordan Valley 45 Chapter has closures due to the number of downed trees and hanging branches.  The DNR is still in assessment mode to determine plan of attack, and is requesting that we hold off on maintenance for now.

Have no fear, we are still planning on our monthly hike!  We have moved the monthly hike to City of Petoskey land and have had our loyal members (and many others) out on-site doing work and to verify the trail is mostly clear for hiking.  We have shortened the hike a bit to allow extra time for some additional maintenance along the way if needed.

The Jordan Valley 45° Chapter will be hosting a hike on April 19, 2025.  We will gather at 9:30am at Bayfront Park (45.375391, -84.959292) and head out by 10:00.

See mile markers on a map here.

Long Hike (~6.50 miles) 9:30:am – We will gather at the hike-end at the entrance of Bayfront Park (616.25) at 9:30am to get a head count and plan transportation. Promptly at 10:00am, we will head out to ferry hikers to the hike start at Shanley & Cedar Valley Rds. (622.75). Overall, the trail is fairly flat. There is about one mile of road walk.

Landmarks along the way: Petoskey Youth Soccer fields, the 2021 rerouted portion of the trail, River Road Sports Complex, Bear River Bridge, North Central Michigan College, Bear River Walkway and Bayfront Park.

Short Hike (~3.75 miles) about 1:pm – Park at River Road Sports Complex, 2221 River Rd. (mile marker 620.0) to meet up with the group coming from Krause Rd. at about 1:pm and then hike to Bayfront Park. Alternatively, you could park at Bayfront Park and hike south on the trail to meet the rest of us coming north.

Rides – Following the hike we will ferry drivers back to their cars at Shanley and the River Road Sports Complex.

As always, dress for the weather, bring plenty of water and snacks. If we have a quorum, afterwards, we may go somewhere in Petoskey for pops and fries.

The Jordan Valley 45° Chapter’s trail runs from Starvation Lake Rd. (SE of Mancelona) to Kipp Rd. near Harbor Springs. A terrific 79 miles of awesome valleys, hills and wooded trail. Monthly hikes are usually on the third Saturday of the month.
