Heritage Backpacking Trails in the BWCAW
Did you know that 2025 marks 35 years since the Kekekabic Trail was reopened? That’s right, the first Kek Trail Club crew got on the trail at Gunflint side and cleared to Howard Lake in April 1990. Scores of volunteers followed. By fall that same year, more than 3,000 treefalls were cut and removed and rest is history.
Today, the Kekekabic Trail is part of the North Country National Scenic Trail, and recently approved by the USFS for through-hiker single permit for NCT route (instead of requiring a new, separate permit when crossing the Gunflint Corridor).
Join us on Thursday, 2/6 for a presentation to celebrate the Kekekabic Trail, Sioux Hustler and Powwow trails which exist today thanks to volunteers like you. We are looking forward to having three of the original Kek 1990 crew on hand at REI.
