Have you ever walked in the footsteps of explorers like Lewis and Clark, or rambled the same trails that ox cart trains once traveled? Have you strolled through a prairie where 60 earthen lodges stood 300 years ago? Now is your chance. This August, you’re invited to make memories on North Dakota’s North Country Trail – to experience rich history, breathtaking sunsets, rolling hills, wide-open prairies, and winding rivers. Volunteers of the the Dakota PrairieSheyenne River Valley, and Central Flyway Chapters are collaborating to offer you a series of progressive hikes, from east to west, culminating at the trail’s western terminus. Join for one day or all four. Here’s a sample of what’s in store:

(Updated April 2, 2025)

  • August 20: A morning hike with the Dakota Prairie Chapter along river bluffs in an oak savanna; an afternoon hike through the Sheyenne National Grassland native prairie; and an evening park picnic. Camping and lodging in Fargo, Wahpeton, Enderlin, and Lisbon.
  • August 21: A morning hike (three distances available) with the Sheyenne River Valley Chapter in the Sheyenne State Forest, where you’ll find North Dakota’s only waterfall; an afternoon hike in the Clausen Springs Recreation Area; and dinner at Thrill Hills ($16). Camping and lodging in Fort Ransom, Valley City, and Lisbon.
  • August 22: An afternoon hike with the Central Flyway Chapter in Lake Sakakawea State Park. Camping and lodging in Riverdale, Pick City, and Garrison. Bismarck and Minot are each about one hour away.
  • August 23: A morning hike (three distances available) in the Audubon National Wildlife Refuge; an afternoon hike with a Lewis and Clark theme to the trail’s western terminus; and an evening picnic and program.
