Guided Public Overlook Loop in the Porcupine Mountains State Wilderness Park
Join the Ni-Miikanaake Chapter on a guided hike with Kate, Urban Park Interpreter with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR). This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the plants, trees, birds, geology, and history of the park.
The loop is approximately 3 miles in length and offers scenic views along with areas of old-growth hardwood forest. It’s a moderately challenging hike with steep uphill and downhill sections as well as possible muddy conditions.
There are no bathrooms or water at the Government Peak trailhead parking area so please plan accordingly. The closest restrooms and drinking water are located approximately 4 miles away at the Lake of the Clouds Overlook area.
Participants should bring suitable hiking footwear, raingear, insect repellant, water, and a snack. Cell phone service may be limited. You must pay an entrance fee to enter the park or have a valid MI Recreation Passport. Dogs are allowed in the park but must be leashed at all times.
