A Fun Challenge!
Our Chequamegon Chapter is supporting a US Forest Service volunteer crew of retirees that will do boardwalk repairs and install a short set of steps on the NCT north of Drummond. To make the most effective use of the Forest Service volunteers, we need a few volunteers to carry lumber from roadside locations north of Drummond to the construction sites.
If you can help, notify Mel Baughman (baugh001@umn.edu) who is coordinating this project.
Mel needs four volunteers at 9:00 am on Sunday, July 1 at the Reynard Lake boat access. Lumber will be loaded into a canoe and ferried to the building site where the NCT crosses an old beaver dam.
Next, we will go to Esox Lake Road and carry lumber down a 100′-long, steep hill to Esox Lake where lumber for steps will be loaded into a canoe and ferried across the lake, then carried 150′ to the building site.
Finally, we will hand carry lumber for boardwalk repairs and extension to Overby Lake – a 5-minute walk.
We expect to finish work by noon.
Mel will provide a canoe, but if someone else has a durable canoe, we could use it, too.
Wear rubber boots or be prepared to get wet feet. Also bring insect repellent, water, and a snack. What fun!
