National Public Lands Day, Grand Traverse Hiking Club Chapter
Join the NCTA Grand Traverse Hiking Club Chapter in celebrating National Public Lands Day with a 6.5-mile hike through the serene and beautiful Sand Lakes Quiet Area! The Trail meanders along small lakes surrounded by rolling hills of oak, poplar, and pine trees in the Pere Marquette State Forest.
We’ll take the 0.9-mile connector trail to the NCNST, then head northeast on the NCNST for about 2.3 miles to Sand Lakes Trail Marker 13 before turning back toward the parking lot. For those of you aiming for our Chapter’s 100 Mile Challenge, you can add 4.6 miles to your tally on this hike! The Trail is mostly smooth and dry with some roots and gentle hills. Plan on hiking about 3 to 3.5 hours a 2.5 mph pace with a break for snack/lunch. Since this is an out-and-back hike, attendees may choose to hike slower and turn back sooner if we can find a volunteer to lead this option.
Bring good hiking shoes, rain gear if weather threatens, plenty of water, and a snack or lunch (if desired). Ticks and poison ivy shouldn’t present any problem if we stay on the trail. A pit toilet is available at the trailhead. Check this event page for potential cancellation before attending.
Contact Sally Dykhuis at sallydykhuis@yahoo.com with any questions. Event attendance is limited to 50, though RSVP is not required.
