J45 Chapter Hike, Springvale Road to Thumb Lake Road
Join the NCTA Jordan Valley 45° Chapter for a group hike of about 7.7 miles.
We will meet at the trail crossing on Thumb Lake Road and Slashing Road at 9:30 and head out by 10:00 or so. We will leave some cars at Thumb Lake Road and drive to the start at Springvale Road – about eight miles north by road. After the hike we can ferry drivers back to the start at Springvale Road.
Short hike option: By Trail, Chandler Hill Road is 4.6 miles south of the start at Springvale Road. If there is interest, we can post some cars there.
- Springvale Road 625.25
- Chandler Hill Road 630
- Thumb Lake Road at Slashing Road 633.25
This beautiful section of Trail is hilly and runs the crest of the high ridge that runs north/south between I-75 and US-131 from south of Petoskey to Thumb Lake Road. Most of the Trail is high and dry, and is through old growth forest. Highlights along the way include a big marsh, a sink hole, and creek crossings. There is a fairly tiring hike up Chandler Hill, which goes uphill for the better part of a mile toward Thumb Lake Road.
Dress for the weather and bring trail snacks and water. If there is interest afterwards, we may stop for pop at the Whi-Ski Inn in Boyne Falls.
The Jordan Valley 45° Chapter’s NCNST section runs from Starvation Lake Road to Kipp Road in Harbor Springs: about 75 miles of awesome valleys, hills and wooded trail. Monthly hikes are usually on the third Saturday of the month. If you can’t bring a friend, one will be provided. Contact Bob Courtois with questions at 248-212-6699 or bcourtois@comcast.net.
