The NCTA Peter Wolfe Chapter (PWC) invites you on a hike led by Mark Roberts to visit PWC Segment 59 on Sunday afternoon, June 19. The hike will start at 2:00 p.m. (ET) from the Canyon Falls MDOT parking lot. We will hike upstream of the Sturgeon River to the Humpback Bridge, rather than our usual trip downstream past the falls. There are some interesting views of the river and some nice flat rock formations.

If you are driving from the north, this is about 10 miles south of L’Anse. If you are driving from the south, it is about three miles north of the US-41 / US-141 junction. Houghton area folks can meet to carpool at 12:45 p.m. at the far eastern end of the Michigan Tech Rosza parking lot, directly east from the main entrance but at the far side of the parking lot. Plan to bring a face mask if you are carpooling.

We will park and start our hike at about Michigan Mile 177.1. We will hike Segment 59, which starts on the Canyon Falls trail and goes east to the Humpback Bridge at mile 178.7. Depending on how ambitious people are, we can continue hiking on the next segment further up the river for a mile or two more. However far we go, we will return to the cars via the same route to make this an out-and-back hike. Once we get back to the cars, we will know the miles to add to your NCTA Hike 100 Challenge, if you are keeping track.

Because this is an out-and-back hike, you can hike as much of this as you want, and at the pace you prefer. There are no major hills, but there are some minor ups and downs and some wet areas and small creeks to get over so wear sturdy footwear. Bring pole(s) if you like to use them.

If you are not already a member of the NCTA Peter Wolfe Chapter, we would love to have you join us in supporting the Trail! If you would like to help us maintain the NCNST this summer, please let us know: pwc@northcountrytrail.org. We have several trail projects and could really use your help!
