Becker County (& Laurentian Lakes Chapter) to benefit from MN Legacy Trail Grant!
Categories: Uncategorized
The Laurentian Lakes Chapter just found out that the Legacy Trail Grant application submitted by Becker County on their behalf was just awarded $100,000 from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. While we had asked for $165,000, it is still great to get the much-needed financial support. For the first cycle of this new grant program, the DNR received $30 million worth of grant requests but only had $3.4 million available this go around. Fortunately, the Legacy Trail grants will be around for the next 24 years thanks to Minnesota voters who passed the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment in November of 2008.
This funding will be used to hire the Minnesota Conservation Corps to construct approximately 30 new miles of the NCT within Becker County by June 2011. This new trail will be located on county tax forfeit lands, on State lands, within scenic Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge, and on private lands between St. Hwy 34 and the City of Frazee.
The Laurentian Lakes Chapter is already looking for more volunteers to assist in scouting, flagging, and later in building and maintaining this new trail. For more info, visit the chapter page.
