Workday, Chequamegon Chapter
The NCTA Chequamegon Chapter‘s next workday is September 9 in the Rainbow Lake Wilderness. We will assemble at the Reynard Lake Road trailhead at 8:30 a.m. The trailhead is about a mile west of the intersection with Delta Drummond Road. If heavy rain is forecast for September 9, the makeup date is September 10. Check our Facebook page for a notice about the date change if necessary.
This workday will involve finishing the tread on two re-routes that we started last year and the prior year, plus removal of several large fallen trees near Reynard Lake – the result of summer storms. If we get a large turnout, another crew will continue clearing Anderson Grade from West Delta Road eastward to the NCNST. The longest reroute is adjacent to Bufo Lake while the shorter one is a half mile or so south near a pond. Treadwork will require use of mattocks, pulaskis, McLeods, and a leaf rake. Large tree removal will involve Silky saws and perhaps an ax. If we are able to form a team to continue clearing Anderson Grade, they will work with Silky saws, smaller hand saws, loppers and a small rake for branches. There’s a job for everyone’s level of skill and energy.
The Chapter will provide some tools, but you are welcome to bring your own: lopper, hand saw, metal leaf rake, small brush rake, mattock, pulaski, McLeod, or ax. Dress for the weather and pack lunch, water, insect repellent, and work gloves. No power tools may be used in the Wilderness. We’ll aim to work until about 2:00 p.m. with a lunch break, but the end time will depend on the weather and your personal schedule and energy.
Mel Baughman, our Chapter Vice President and NCTA Board member, will lead this workday. Please RSVP directly to Mel if you can participate: baugh001@umn.edu. Your RSVP will help Mel plan the workday and gather up tools for the volunteers.
