A wonderful hike any time of the year with the Hiawatha Shore-to-Shore Chapter!

The NCT crosses Dick Road twice, at the south crossing it is near the Pine River, at the north crossing the Trail meanders toward Soldier Lake. Between the two crossings there are rivers and marshes, ridges and swales.

We will gather at the south crossing, then carpool to the upper crossing to hike back toward our cars. Parking will be on the wide shoulders of the dirt road. There is a possible alternate parking area near the Pine River off Dick Road if the conditions of the driveway are conducive to vehicular travel. The length of this hike is 7 miles, and there is an option for a shorter hike of about 4 miles if that is your pleasure.

Dick Road is a USFS Road (FS3939) that runs between H-40 at the south end and M-28 to the north. The gathering will be 3.7 miles north of H-40 and 8.5 miles south of M-28. H-40 is the county road between Trout Lake and Rudyard. Dick Road is about 3.7 miles from M-123 – turn east on H-40 off M-123 just south of Trout Lake. The north end of Dick Road is almost 24 miles west of I-75 via M-28.

Bring:
Clothing to stay comfortable while hiking in spring conditions (layers), footwear that can get wet if necessary, as there could be a few places that might be wet, a whistle, a camera, a snack and hydration for the trail, see the 10 essentials of day hiking. If you don’t have a friend to bring with you, one will be waiting to hike with you when you get there!

We will record your name and contact information before we start hiking.

At the end of the hike we will gather at a local eatery for refueling and refreshment.

Questions? Comments? Text Tom Walker at (906) 322-2617. Cell phone service is spotty in the area so there may not be an answer the day of the event.

All of these miles hiked will count towards the 2024 NCT Hike 100 Challenge!
