Start the New Year with some NCT Navigation Know-How!

Spirit of the Woods is hosting a Navigation Workshop on Saturday January 18, 2025.

Presentation from 10am-12pm followed by a potluck lunch, and around 1pm we hit the trail to hike and practice using Avenza.

RSVP required and space is limited so that individual attention can be given to participants. Please contact Monica Hatch at mlhatch8@hotmail.com and include “Navigation Workshop” in the subject line to reserve a spot and ask any questions you may have.

The detailed workshop location and map links will be sent to registered participants. For driving distance and planning purposes, the location is near Walhalla, MI. Wallhalla is about midway between Baldwin and Ludington, MI. Act quickly to guarantee a spot.

Topics covered include NCTA Interactive Map and Avenza App:

The NCTA Interactive online map is full of useful features for planning and navigating hikes. Learn how to navigate the map and its features. Find out which trail maps are available with NCT and those that must be obtained elsewhere. Learn how to use map layers, backgrounds, find locations and mileages, and how to download and print paper maps. We will demonstrate how to access and use this resource on a laptop. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own laptop or notebook to follow along.

The Avenza App is a free on Android and Apple phones. Participants are encouraged to download the app prior to the workshop but assistance will be available at the workshop if you need help. This portion of the workshop will teach you map downloads, finding current location, coordinate systems, tracking a hike, marking waypoints with notes, tagging locations, and including photos.
