Jim Dornbush: NCNST Long Distance Hiker
Jim Dornbush
Wisconsin and 2000 Miles
(Previously received the central patch + Michigan, Mackinac Bridge, and 1000 Miles.)
Even though it was a longer distance from home, it felt like a much easier task to complete Wisconsin after having completed all the miles in Michigan. Over the course of three years, Nancy and I had four trips of at least a week at a time. The hikes in the area were all quite nice, including a relatively close sighting of a black bear on the same road as a roadwalk at the eastern end of the state. One of the favorite hikes was in Copper Falls State Park, both for the falls and our first porcupine encounter while hiking.
During the hikes we noted the excellent job the local [NCTA] Chapters do on nice backcountry campsites. (Even though we never stayed overnight, they made great lunch break stops.) We appreciated the continued work they are doing on getting trail miles off the roads.
