I just read this update from Gayle Coyer…

Hi all, here is the information about the new Sixth Edition Guide.

March 25, 2010: NEW! The Sixth Edition of the “Guide to the Superior Hiking Trail, published by us — the Superior Hiking Trail Association — has just arrived. This guide continues to be your best source of detailed information about the Superior Hiking Trail. It includes maps, campsite information, water sources, and a mile-by-mile description of the trail. The trail starts at Jay Cooke State Park and continues through Duluth (42 miles but no SHT backcountry campsites in this section), then there is a gap where SHTA is currently building trail, then the trail continues again west of Two Harbors at the Fox Farm Road/East Trailhead and goes to Otter Lake Road near the Canadian border (235 miles miles with 82 backcountry campsites in this section). The Guide price is $15.95. We also sell a complete set of pocket maps to the trail for $2.50.

I think there is going to be a question for awhile of what constitutes a through-hike since there are no SHT backcountry campsites in Duluth. For most people I think it will be from Fox Farm Road/East Trailhead to Otter Lake Road, a distance of 235 miles. But then as we continue to build the trail west toward Duluth everytime we open a new section the begining of the trail will change and the through-hike distance will change. So the mileage and the start of the through-hike will continue to be in flux for a few years.

Also please note that the Superior Shuttle will be scheduling rides to the new start of the trail at Fox Farm Road/East Trailhead going toward Two Harbors. You can now also get a ride to the end of the trail at Otter Lake Road via the Shuttle. It will be by reservation only since they are really going to have to juggle things a bit to make the schedule work out. Check out their website at www.superiorshuttle.com

Based upon recent reports, large parts of the Superior Hiking Trail are still too muddy for a good hike but they are quickly drying out with the warm & dry spring we’ve been enjoying here in northern Minnesota.  For the latest conditions, be sure to check out the SHTA trail conditions web page or contact the SHTA office in Two Harbors (their contact info is above).
