I had the pleasure of speaking with our intrepid thru-hiker Eb “Nimblewill Nomad” Eberhart yesterday afternoon.  He answered his cell phone from atop a ridge overlooking Lake Superior by Finland, MN.  He is currently finishing the last miles of the Superior Hiking Trail and expects to be in Two Harbors tomorrow (10/7).   After reaching Two Harbors, he’ll be done with his thru-hike having walked continuously from Lake Sakakawea St. Park to Crown Pt. St. Historic Site.

He survived the remaining portion of the Border Route Trail on his ailing knee and even persevered through the latest challenge thrown at him by mother nature – the severe blowdown on the northernmost portion of the Superior Hiking Trail.  Out in the brunt of the storm, he said that it was unlike anything he’s ever experienced.

Eb wants to hike the certified segments in North Dakota that he had to skip because they were buried in snow this “spring.”  Here’s a draft itinerary:

  • Friday – Sheyenne National Grasslands
  • Saturday & Sunday – Lake Ashtabula
  • Monday & Tuesday – Lonetree WMA and New Rockford/McClusky Canals (only a piece)
  • Wednesday – Lake Sakakawea State Park

My hope is that NCTA members & volunteers will be there with him as he – interestingly enough – finishes up his hike where it all began this past April – in North Dakota.

You can read more about Eb’s hike online.

Our other long-distance hiker – Bonita “Mother Goose” Helton is waiting to get back out onto the NCT / Buckeye Trail in Ohio in about a week or so.  Follow her hike online.
