NCT Hike – Boardman River and Sand Lakes Quiet Area
Join the Grand Traverse Chapter of the North Country Trail Association on a 6-mile hike along the Boardman River and in the Sand Lakes Quiet Area.
This part of the NCT meanders for a beautiful 1.5 miles along the river and through small lakes surrounded by rolling hills of oak, poplar, and pine trees in the Pere Marquette State Forest.
Hike: We’ll meet at the main Sand Lakes Quiet Area parking lot. We’ll shuttle cars south on Broomhead Road and west on Supply Road to the Supply Road trailhead. We’ll then hike back to the meeting spot. For those of you aiming for our chapter’s 100-Mile Challenge, you can add 5.1 miles to your tally.
The trail is mostly smooth with gentle hills. Plan on hiking about 3.5 hours at a 2 mph pace, with a snack break.
Hiking shoes and hiking poles would be helpful. Consider long pants and insect repellant to reduce possible tick issues.
